The Major and BatOU
Digital illustration, 18x24 in / 300ppi. Created primarily in Adobe Fresco.
Inspired by Mamoru Oshii’s landmark animated film Ghost in the Shell (1995), one of my all-time favorite works of science fiction cinema. The film’s haunting atmosphere, philosophical themes, and striking visual design left a lasting impression on me when I first saw it as a teenager.
This illustration revisits a moment between Major Motoko Kusanagi and Batou, interpreting the scene through a slightly updated cyberpunk aesthetic. I aimed to capture the emotional contrast between the characters — the Major’s quiet search for meaning and transcendence, and Batou’s grounded loyalty and compassion for his friend and partner.
